Quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory for Baryons

We develop quenched chiral perturbation theory for baryons using the graded-symmetry formalism of Bernard and Golterman and calculate non-analytic contributions to the baryon masses coming from quenched chiral loops. The usual term proportional to mq3/2m_{q}^{3/2} is substantially altered due to the cancellation of diagrams with internal quark loops. In addition, the ηâ€Č\eta' ``hairpin'' vertex leads to a new correction, proportional to mq1/2m_{q}^{1/2}. We compare our results to numerical lattice data and use them to estimate the size of the quenching error in the octet baryon masses.Comment: 7 pages (An abridged version of this note will appear in the proceedings of Lattice'93. On the mechanical interplay between intra- and inter-synchronization during collective cell migration : a numerical investigation

Collective cell migration is a fundamental process that takes place during several biological phenomena such as embryogenesis, immunity response, and tumorogenesis, but the mechanisms that regulate it are still unclear. Similarly to collective animal behavior, cells receive feedbacks in space and time, which control the direction of the migration and the synergy between the cells of the population, respectively. While in single cell migration intra-synchronization (i.e. the synchronization between the protrusion-contraction movement of the cell and the adhesion forces exerted by the cell to move forward) is a sufficient condition for an efficient migration, in collective cell migration the cells must communicate and coordinate their movement between each other in order to be as efficient as possible (i.e. inter-synchronization). Here, we propose a 2D mechanical model of a cell population, which is described as a continuum with embedded discrete cells with or without motility phenotype. The decomposition of the deformation gradient is employed to reproduce the cyclic active strains of each single cell (i.e. protrusion and contraction). We explore different modes of collective migration to investigate the mechanical interplay between intra- and inter-synchronization. The main objective of the paper is to evaluate the efficiency of the cell population in terms of covered distance and how the stress distribution inside the cohort and the single cells may in turn provide insights regarding such efficiency

Historians of crime in the early modern period have long been aware of the potentialities of various types of popular literature as sources for attitudes towards crime and criminals and, less certainly and less frequently, as sources of factual information. Initially, therefore, the volume under review here would seem to constitute a welcome addition to our knowledge and important genre within earlier modern popular culture, ballads and broadsides. In general, this initial reaction is justifi..

Three Essays on the Economic Impact of Immigration

    Get PDF
With the significant rise in immigration to the U.S. over the last few decades, fully understanding the economic impact of immigration is paramount for policy makers. As such, this dissertation consists of three empirical essays contributing to the literature on the impact of immigration. In my first essay, I re-examine the impact of immigration on housing rents and completely controlling for endogenous location choices of immigrants. I model rents as a function of both contemporaneous and initial economic and housing market conditions. I show that existing estimates of the impact of immigration on rents are biased and the source of the bias is the instrumental variable strategy common in much of the immigration literature. In my second essay, I present a new approach to estimating the effect of immigration on native wages. Noting the imperfect substitutability of immigrants and natives within education groups, I posit an empirical framework where labor markets are stratified by occupations. Using occupation-specific skill to define homogeneous skill groups, I estimate the partial equilibrium (within skill group) effect of immigration. The results suggest that when one defines labor market cohorts that directly compete in the labor market, the effect of immigration on native wages is roughly twice as large as previous estimates in the literature. In my third essay, I return to the housing market and examine the effects of immigration within metropolitan areas. Specifically, I investigate the relationship between immigrant inflows, native outflows, and rents. Taking advantage of the unique settlement patterns of immigrants, I show that the effect of immigration on rents is lower in both high-immigrant neighborhoods and portions of the rent distribution where immigrants cluster. Contrary to the existing belief in the literature, the results suggest that the preferences of natives, not immigrants, bid up rents in response to an immigrant inflow

Caroline Dunn, Stolen Women in Medieval England : Rape, Abduction and Adultery, 1100-1500

Rape in medieval England is a complex and contested subject. At the centre of this complexity, as Caroline Dunn emphasises in this excellent new study of the subject, is the problem of translating the Latin verb rapere. As she makes clear, and as, indeed, other historians have noted, simply translating it as ‘rape’ in the modern sense will not do : legal documentation can claim that an individual offender ‘rapuit’ a variety of people or things. This can mean that rape in the modern sense, tha..

Reporting Crime in the North of England eighteenth-century Newspaper : a Preliminary Investigation

This article is intended to contribute to a growing literature on newspaper reporting of crime during the eighteenth century. Most of the work completed on this subject has been focussed on London papers, where both the problem of crime and the nature of newspaper reporting may well have been different from the provinces. One important study of a provincial newspaper’s crime reporting has, however, been completed, by Esther Snell, based on the Kentish Post. Snell’s work is of a high quality, and has formed the basis of a number of published articles. But reading other provincial newspapers provides a different impression of crime reporting, and of readers’ probable reaction to it, from that given by Snell. This article draws most of its information from the York Courant, a more important regional paper that the Kentish Post, and also draws on information from other northern newspapers. It argues that the reporting of crime in the York Courant was normally brief and far from sensational. The article also considers other ways in which people could be informed about crime from print culture, and ends by raising the issue of how the more important regional newspapers played a role in integrating provincial and national elite culture, and how reporting crime may have fitted into that process

Rigging Realistic Skin Deformation with Muscle Systems

    Get PDF
Realistic skin deformation is one of the major criteria for creating believable, dig- itally enhanced characters. Muscle simulation is one of the more popular techniques used in filmmaking. It helps bring a sense of realism to the character by adding subtle, secondary motion to the skin. Small features like these make the character appear more lifelike. This thesis focuses on the generation of a character rig and implementation of a digital muscle system for a tiger. The rig is built and animated in Maya and the Maya Muscle tool was used to create the muscle system. The muscle deformations are compared to the standard smooth skinning method in a walk and run animation

Issues and Conflicts in the Management of the Public Domain of the Saddle Mountains in Eastern Washington: A Case Study

    Get PDF
This thesis examines the prehistoric, historic, and contemporary patterns of land use and their effects in the Saddle Mountains of eastern Washington. Federal laws and Indian treaties require that federal lands be managed to preserve natural and cultural resources while meeting the demands of private interests for economic development and of the general public for recreational access. Land management conflicts created by these diverse interests are reviewed in the context of the history of the study area, the legal framework that directs its management, and the management process as it actually works. It concludes with recommendations to resolve land use conflicts
